Skylight Shades

Although skylight shades provide exceptional access to sunlight, many homeowners want additional light control in their home. As a result, blind manufacturers have created ways to filter, block, and diffuse sunlight with skylight shades.

In general, skylight shades are categorized as light filtering or room darkening and come with either manual or motorized operating functions. Light filtering skylight shades diffuse incoming light, providing a softer alternative to harsh direct sunlight. Room darkening shades, on the other hand, block all incoming light, giving homeowners total control over the light in any given area.

Control options differ depending on the manufacturer of the skylight. Most, however, offer manual skylight blind operation through use of an extended pole. Some, like Hunter Douglas, offer motorized control options so homeowners can use a remote to open and close their blinds. Motorized skylight blinds are ideal for very tall ceilings or when the skylight is in a location that is difficult to reach.

Most of these shades are made with cellular shades; specialty blinds that provide insulation in addition to light control and privacy. These blinds come in a variety of colors designed to match the individual decorating needs of each homeowner. The versatility of cellular shades gives homeowners the option of coordinating their skylight shades with their regular window treatments, creating a seamless decorating theme with endless light control possibilities.
