Roller Shades

Roller Shades, also known as roller blinds or roll up blinds, come in a variety of textures, fabrics, and colors. They are also available in light filtering options to maintain privacy and light control without obstructing views. Roller shades also come in both chain loop and spring lift options and provide a contemporary sleek look at a modest price.

There are seven main categories of roller shades:

  • Solar Shades Fabric – Also known as sheerweave shades, Solar Shades provide light filtration and are available in various opacities. They are designed to help reduce bright sunlight without blocking it completely. They also provide access to outside views. Solar Shades are only available in the continuous cord loop control (see below).
  • Room Darkening – Also known as room dimming, these roller shades are designed to help block all outdoor light from entering a room. These are best for media rooms, living rooms, and offices to prevent sun glare on televisions or monitors. Room darkening shades come in both spring lift and cord loop designs.
  • Light Filtering – Specifically designed to filter light, these roller shades are available in varying opacities. These roller shades are meant for light filtration only and, although they provide added ambiance and light control, they do not generally preserve views out windows. They are available in both spring lift and continuous cord loop controls.
  • Spring Lift – Also known as pull shades, use a spring system for control. Users need to directly manipulate the shade in order to pull it down or activate the spring system so it will roll up the shade. Perfect for child safety. Spring lift roller shades are available for windows up to 72” in width and 96” in height.
  • Cord Loop – Cord loops, or Continuous cord loops, give more precise control over the level of the shade. By manipulating a cord on one end of the shade, you can raise and lower the shade to the desired height. Roller shades with cord loops come in wider styles than the spring lift and can fit a larger variety of windows. Cord loops come on shades with widths up to 98” and heights up to 120”.
  • Cassette Roller Cover – Available from Hunter Douglas, the shades covers are designed to hide the traditional roller at the top of the window. Roller shades covers compliment the sleek design of roller blinds and give the window a finished look.
  • Decorative Hems – Many roller shades come with the option for decorative hems. You can choose from piping, fabric or fringe or a unique shaped edge. Many shades come in a range of styles with choice of trimming or edging. By customizing your roller shades, you can perfectly match your existing décor.

All roller shades have a weighted bottom edge, usually consisting of a rod, so that it always remains flat and balanced. You can also choose the type of roll you need: standard or reversed. A standard roll is best for plain windows that have no decorative wood trim. A Reverse roll is best for windows with decorative trim since they give more clearance between the window and shade.

Since roller shades take up very little window space and have a simple design, they are best suited for modern or contemporary style rooms or for homeowners looking for simple, low profile window coverings. They're also perfect for windows that cannot accommodate traditional drapes or shades.

Keep in mind the type of shade you want and where you plan on hanging it. Manufacturers will deduct up to 1 1/4” from the shade width if you plan on mounting it inside your window. Talk to a professional prior to ordering roller shades to make sure you have measured your window correctly.
